GHMC New House Numbers System in Hyderabad

The GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) has come up with another initiative to make house numbers of the residents in Hyderabad more simple and smart. The GHMC is also contemplating to introduce street sign boards for the twin cities along with new house / door numbers starting from circles eight and nine, Abids and Himatyatnagar. The new house numbers will just have a specified area code, street number and respective house number. Residential Flats in an apartment will have an additional number as informed by GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu.

New house numbers for the old city of Hyderabad is likely to be completed in three months. The allocation of new numbers to important and much populated localities such as L.B.Nagar, Kukatpally, Malkajgiri, Uppal, Rajendranagar and Kapra is in advanced stage. The consultants have been appointed to for these areas along with Serlingampally, Patancheru, R.C. Puram, Qutbullapur, Alwal, Khairatabad and Secunderabad areas.

The GHMC is expecting that the entire exercise of allocating new house numbers for all 647 localities will be completed in two years. The core city area of old MCH with 647 localities has been divided into 254 localities and suburbs into 393 to be completed in the time span of two years. The specialised department / section, House Numbering Cell of GHMC has studied the house numbering system in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai and started the new system in Hyderabad. Present house numbering system in Hyderabad is not in order and many numbers are allocated on an temporary basis.

New numbering system of the GHMC will starts from one corner of the locality nearer to the city centre. A street nearer to the city centre is numbered as street number one and they will continue in clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.Depending on the traffic direction and layout pattern of the area, the new house numbers will be assigned in increasing order in the locality. Each premises in the area / locality / colony is assigned a number irrespective of plan approval. The vacant sites also will be allotted numbers. For instance, if your old house number is H.No.6-9- 54/ A/ 220/E/1, the new one could be Street. No. 1, 55, Hill Fort, Hyderabad.

  1. It is nice to know that there is a developmental plan, though the surrounding miunicipalities have grown alarmingly. Please do not harrass the owners of these buildings since the plans were approved and structures were certified by the conserned municipal authorities and by their structural engineers and yet huge amounts of “penalities” have been paid. What good is it to proclaim that a penthouse on top of a 5 storied building as “it stands unauthorised” to lay a road below, after collecting Rs. 16,650 as penality?
