Profile of Mulayam Singh Yadav of Samajwadi Party – Uttar Pradesh

Mulayam Singh Yadav of Samajwadi Party is a senior politician in India. He steered the SP to take over the reigns of power in UP Assembly elections 2012. He assumed Uttar Pradesh Chief Ministership for three terms. The grand victory of SP in UP Assembly Elections 2012 has brought back this veteran leader of Indian politics into the limelight. At the age of 72, Mulayam Singh is back in UP Politics with SP’s stunning success in UP Assembly elections 2012. The SP has won 224 seats, best performance by any party in the State after 1991. Mulayam’s son Akhilesh Yadav has emerged as an young leader in UP with these elections. Here is the brief profile cum bio-data of Mulayam Singh Yadav:

Mulayam is a disciple of Charan Singh, the peasant leader and follower of Socialist, Ram Manohar Lohia. He emerged as a key figure in UP politics in 1990s, when Third Front appeared at the national level under the leadership of VP Singh. Mulayam was once considered as a chief contender for PM post from Third Front. He served as Union defense minister in Third Front government. Here is the timeline of Mulayam Singh Yadav:

a) November 22, 1939: Mulayam Singh Yadav was born. He studied MA and BT from Agra University.

b) 1977 : Mulayam first became State Minister in UP

c) 1980 : Became President of UP Lok Dal

d) 1982 : Elected as UP legislative council leader of opposition

e) 1989 : Took over as CM for 1st time in November 1990. After the fall of VP Singh Govt at Centre, Mulayam Singh Yadav joined Chandra Sekhar’s JD (Socialist) and continued as Chief Minister with Congress support.

f) April 1991: Mulayam’s Govt falls as Congress pulls out of the coalition. This was also coincided with Congress pulling down Chandra Sekhar Govt at the Center.

g) Mid 1991: BJP emerges as a leading force in UP. Mulayam Singh loses power to BJP

h) October 1992 : Mulayam floated his own Samajwadi Party (SP)

i) 1993 : Mulayam allies with BSP for Assembly polls. Interestingly, SP and BSP brought down BJP from power and Mulayam becomes Chief Minister with Congress and JD support.

j) 1996 : Mulayam elected to 11th Lok Sabha from Mainpuri Lok Sabha Constituency. SP of Mulayam joins United Front Government at the Center and Mulayam took over as Defence Minister. The Central Govt falls in 1998 and fresh polls held. Mulayam returns to Lok Sabha from Sambhal Constituency.

k) 1999: Atal Bihari Vajpayee govt falls at the Center. Mulayam contested from Sambhal and Kannauj Consitituencies in fresh elections and won from both segments. Maya Govt falls as BJP withdraws support in August 2003.

l) 2003. Mulayam sworn in as CM for third term in September 2003 with the support of smaller parties.

m) January 2004 : Mulayam resigned to Lok Sabha seat and elected from Gunnaur Assembly Constituency with a record margin of 1.83,899 votes.

n) 2004 : Mulayam contested to Lok Sk Sabha from Mainpuri Constituency.

o) 2007 : Mulayam Singh lost to BSP in Assembly Elections.

p) 2009: Contested and won as an MP from Mainpuri Constituency.

q) 2012 : Succeeded in bringing the SP back into power in UP and given reigns to his son Akhilesh Yadav.
