The Gulabi Gang is the name of women’s movement in Uttar Pradesh. The organization was launched by Sampat Pal Devi in 2006 in the Banda District of the state. The Banda region is one of the poorest districts of the country and dominated by patriarchal culture, caste divisions, female illiteracy, child marriages etc. The women’s group lead by Sampat Pal Devi is popularly known as Gulabi or Pink Gang as all the members of the group wear bright pink saris and wield bamboo sticks.
Gulabi Gang has about 20000 members till the date and has a chapter at Paris, France. The group also has male supporters apart from tens of thousands of women members. The group is also involved in social activities such as ensuring proper public distribution, disbursement of pension to elderly widows etc.
The group mainly intervenes on behalf of women. The group is strong in the backward region of Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh and also made inroads into several places of North India. The activities of Gulabi gang are the subject of the 2010 movie named as Pink Saris by Kim Longinotto and also a 2012 documentary. Gulab Gang, a movie starred by Madhuri Dixit is to be released on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2013.
