Telangana Panchayat Elections in February 2019

Despite High Court’s deadline to conduct panchayat elections in Telangana State before 10th January 2019, the election commission is looking for more time. The EC may end up with releasing notification only for the panchayat elections before the deadline.

Election Commission is likely to conduct panchayat elections in three phases. Each phase require at least 4-5 days gap to complete the nomination process. Hence it takes one month to complete all three phases of elections.

Apart from this, the reservations are not finalised for panchayats. Supreme Court has ordered the Government not to exceed 50 percent limit on reservations. Reservations have to be finalised by 29th December as per the orders of Panchayat Raj department.

Considering all these factors, Telangala Electoral Officer is likely to knock the door of High Court again seeking more time for smooth conduct of Panchayat Elections. They may request for another 45 days to complete the election process.
