Suma Kanakala was born on 22nd March 1975 in Trissur, Kerala, India to Sri. P. N. Kutty and Smt. P. Vimala. She is married to actor Rajeev Kanakala and has two children named Roshan Kanakala and Manaswini Kanakala. Suma is a well-known television anchor, host, singer, actress, and producer.
She is a Malayali from Kerala, but also speaks Telugu Hindi, English, and Tamil. She has acted in various films from 1991 in Malayalam and Telugu, Tamil languages and then she entered serials like Swayamvaram and Geetanjali. She has also starred in telefilms in 1995. As she did not have any interest in acting in films and serials, she moved on to become an anchor on the small screen.
