India Post is getting modernized. The largest network of post offices are going to eb completely computerised and integrated across the country, making postal transactions easy and hassle free for the lakhs of customers. Most important change to be introduced is the ATMs at Post Offices. The Postal department will set up about 1000 ATMs across the country for the convenience of savings bank account holders. Out of these 1000, about 100 ATMs are going to be started in Andhra Pradesh only. All these changes are part of the recommendations of Syamala Gopinath committee. The committee has also recommended increase in interest rates of various post office saving schemes.
The postal department is proposed to bring all the cash deposits under the core banking transactions. All the post offices will be computerised by September 2012. Apart from ATMs, customers also will be provided with Internet, SMS and Mobile Banking facilities.
It is estimated that about 8.85 accounts are there with India Post by 2011. About Rs. 26457 crore cash deposits are available with post officers across the country. ATMs will be established in Main and Sub Post offices in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
