Bathukamma Sarees Distribution in Telangana Districts

Government of Telangana has decided to distribute 95 lakhs Bathukamma Sarees all over the state. The sarees were produced by the Sircilla Powerloom Cluster. The program will start from 12 October 2018. Government has clarified that these sarees are gift to the women of Telangana on the occasion of Bathukamma festival. The cost of each Bathukamma Saree is estimated at Rs.290.

Bathukamma Sareers distribution will be completed within a week from 12 October 2018. The decision has prompted the controversy as election code of conduct is in force in Telangana. Congress party has raised objections over the saree distribution policy of the care taker Government.

Various Designs:

The Government has also considered the opinions of women representatives and self help groups in designing sareers this year. The sarees are made with 100 per cent polyester with zari border and available in 80 different shades. More than 1 crore women are found eligible to avail the saree scheme.

Employment Generation:

In terms of length of sarees, apart from regular 6.30 metre length, 5 lakh sarees of 9 metres length were also produced as these are worn by elderly women in North Telangana districts. Government has emphasized that the production of Bathukamma sarees has provided employment to 10000 families of weaving community in Sircilla.
