Nellore District is known for Group rivalries and semi-factional politics in all leading political parties. The Congress Party has very high profile politicians from the district like TSR, NJR, Mekapati and Anam groups. The Congress has been the main looser in the district in terms of winning seats due to multiple groups and rivalries. The district Congress politics is dominated by Former Chief Minister of the state N. Janardhan Reddy, T. Subbirami Reddy, Panabaka Lakshmi, Mekapati Brothers and Anam Brothers. The natural beneficiary of these rivalries is the TDP. The TDP has not been able to strengthen the party further due to lack of strong leadership that could influence and win the voters to a greater extent. The only popular face of the party is Somireddy Chandra Mohan Reddy.
Despite so many difficulties, the TDP has won 5 out of total 10 Assembly segments during 2009 elections. The Congress Party bagged 4 seats leaving a seat for the newly born PRP. The PRP managed to attract urban voters to some extent in the last elections. Main leaders in the district are N. Janardhan Reddy, Mekapati Raja Mohan Reddy, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Panabaka Lakshmi, Somireddy Chandra Mohan Reddy etc.
The political equations in the Nellore district are likely to undergo major changes with the emergence Y.S. Jagan as a political force. To be born Jagan’s Party already has strong supporters from the district in the form of Mekapati Brothers, Gopal Reddy (Ex-DCC President) and Nallapureddy Prasanna Kumar Reddy.
Coming to the other features of the district, Nellore has been known for high yield of paddy crop. Apart from the capital town of Nellore, Kavali and Gudur are the other major towns in the district. The district is bounded by the Bay of Bengal (Ease), the state of Tamil Nadu (South), the YSR district (Kadapa) to the west and Prakasam district to the north.
