Suman Rathod is an MLA of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from Khanapur Assembly Constituency. Her husband Ramesh Rathod is serving as a Lok Sabha Member (MP) from Adilibad Constituency. Suman Rathod has been in news for her status of ST category and Assembly membership from ST constituency. The Andhra Pradesh High Court recently declared that the election of TDP leader Suman Rathode as an MLA from Khanapur in Adilabad district in 2009 Assembly elections as illegal. Sumna Rathod appealed in the Supreme Court and got stayed the orders of AP High Court.
Suman Rathod contested the Khanapu Constituency, an ST assembly seat in the 2009 elections. She defeated her nearest rival Ajmeera Hari Naik of the Congress. The Congress leader has moved the High Court questioning her ST status. The Congress candidate has contended that Rathod belongs to Banjara community of Maharashtra. He claimed that the Banjara Community in Maharashtra was recognised as backward community and not ST.
