Cabinet Clears SC, ST Reservations in Govt. Job Promotions Bill 2012

The Central Cabinet of Govt. of India has approved the proposed bill for providing reservations for SCs and STs in the promotions. The Union Cabinet has cleared the bill on 4th September 2012. The decision has gained importance as the Supreme Court has quashed the similat decision taken by UP Government in Apri l2012.

The Government is likely to introduce a Constitution Amendment Bill in Parliament to this effect. The Samajwadi Party. The Government has to amend at least four articles of the Constitution to implement the quota for SCs and STs in promotions.

The Mayavati Government earlier implemented SC / ST reservations in promotions of higher level Government jobs. The Apex Court has terminated the decision of UP Government. The Supreme Court has termed the move as unconstitutional.

Most of the parties in the Lok Sabha are demanding for a Constitutional Amendment. The Central Government has promised the parties to introduce a bill in the Parliament. The BSP has welcomed the Central Cabinet’s decision to introduce a Bill and SP has opposed the move.
