He defeated Agam Chandra Sekhar of the Telangan Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in 2009 Assembly elections. That was a sensational win for the Congress party as Chandrasekhar was a strong leader of the TRS who served 5 terms as an MLA from the Constituency.
