The Government of India has announced prestigious Padma Awards 2012. The President of India, Pratibha Patil has approved the list of awardees under Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Sri categories. The President has approved 109 awards in various categories. These include five Padma Vibhushan, 27 Padma Bhushan and 77 Padma Shri Awards for the people from various walks of life. There are 19 women awardees in the list. The prestigious Bharat Ratna 2012 award has not been awarded to anybody.
The second to honour Padma Vibhushan is warded for the late cartoonist Mario Miranda and legendary musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Others in the same category include K G Subramanyan (art, painting and sculpture), Kantilal Hastimal Sancheti (medicine) and T V Rajeswar (civil service). Noted actors Shabana Azmi and Dharmedra and film director Mira Nair were conferred Padma Bhushan. Reputed cardiologist Devi Prasad Shetty was awarded with Padma Bhushan. The awards were announced on the eve of Republic Day. Following is the list of Padma Awardees for 2012:
